Bernama Radio: What’s next after Pre-school?

Principal Muhamad Hafizi Mihzan, or more fondly known as Ustaz Muhamad, was the special guest on the eighth episode of our #GOGENIUS Program on Bernama Radio. Currently the principal of Sekolah Tinta, he used to be the Principal of Islamic Education in Genius Aulad. He shared that Sekolah Tinta is in its 2nd year of operation, and as Malaysia’s first STEM-based primary school that utilizes KSSR as its main curriculum, it is the continuity that Genius Aulad students can look forward to after graduating from their preschool stage. The following is an extract of his episode: Is it the responsibility of preschool teachers to ensure that children are ready to enter primary school? When we speak of readiness, I believe that it is a collective effort of both educators and parents. Throughout preschool, there are four basic areas of development that we help the children to develop that will help them adapt to primary school: socio-emotional, cognitive, physical and communication. All these basic things are not something that children can learn perfectly in simply one place and time. These developments take place depending on the condition of the environment that they are in and how they view them. I believe that the environment in preschool and primary are vastly different, and therefore parents should also contribute and help out in the development of these four different areas. Looking at Genius Aulad’s “Lessons Beyond Classroom!” tagline, it means that learning does not only take place within the classroom walls; we must make use of any learning space available to provide new experiences to our children. If you ask me, learning space is everywhere and life is a school. Therefore, parents can play a role beyond preschool, and teachers can play their part in preschool. Will what children learn in preschool contribute to how they adapt to primary school? The name itself, PRESCHOOL, would imply that it is a starter programme that will prepare them for a formal learning environment. It is at this stage that they will learn things that will ease them through the process of adapting to primary school, such as self-management skills, character building, basic academic knowledge and so on. Preschool is a great platform to nurture a child’s mood and general outlook towards their years of formal education. What are some of the skills that parents should instill in children to prepare them for primary school?
  1. Communication Skills
  2. Money Skills
  3. Self-Management Skills
At Sekolah Tinta, how do you manage the first graders? During Orientation Week, we would establish transition programmes that would help our first graders to get used to their new school environment. Typically, during the first month or so, we can still see their “preschool” behavior. The approach that we would practice in this period would be incorporated with playful elements. For example, one of the biggest differences between preschool and primary school is Play Time. That’s why, we have that in Sekolah Tinta as well (other than their actual recess time or physical education lessons), to provide them with a mood-booster that will make them feel more excited about going to school. Besides that, through our STEM-based approaches, we are honing their natural creativity and playful curiosity in a way that would keep them interested in their academics. We also practice regular recognition of their progress and achievements in school, by having Student of the Week, to show the students that we are grateful for their hard work and effort. For more of Ustaz Muhamad’s insightful take on a child’s life after preschool, give our eighth episode of #GOGENIUS on Bernama Radio a listen! Do be sure to catch the next episode as well, as we’ve got a lot more things to share that parents might find useful in handling their child’s preschool experience.   https://www.facebook.com/bernamaradio/videos/423982128281820/UzpfSTc0NDAyOTE3ODY4OjEwMTU2OTg5NzIwMzc3ODY5/

Bernama Radio: Should Preschool Fees Dictate your Child’s Education Future?

Some parents are under the impression that the higher the fees are, the better their academic progress. Do expensive fees guarantee your child education excellence?

When it comes to the topic of school fees, it’s always associated with how “cheap” or “expensive” it is. Rather than look at it that way, what about looking at what actually goes into the fees? How are the facilities? Support system? Maintenance? Programme? Is the learning environment conducive? Are the teachers well-trained? These are some of the things that we take into consideration when we speak of our reasonable fees at Genius Aulad.

Can parents hope with high school fees, their child will become more well educated with best education programme as promised?

Education is a form of love that can’t always be measured numerically. When we say “well educated”, what does that mean? Is it only something that we assess based on their ability to read and write only? What if they’re able to say “Alhamdulillah”, or have a positive outlook on learning? Surely that must count as “well educated” too.  To answer this question, we must look at our children from all aspects, and not just in aspects that is easier for us to spot and count.

What are some of the misconceptions that parents have regarding school fees?

A common misconception would be that they do not get their money’s worth. They see the numerical value and think of it as expensive, but they often overlook what they truly get for what they are paying for.

Why preschools have different fees charges?

Certain factors would affect this, such as the upkeep of their facilities, teachers training, research and development expenses, and so on. At Genius Aulad, however, all fees are generally the same across Malaysia. The only thing that set them apart sometimes are the occasional promotions that some centres would run.

To hear more about what our founder, Puan Zaliza Alias has to say on this topic, watch a rerun of our episode on Radio Bernama’s Facebook Page! Be sure to tune in on our next one, as we go live every WEDNESDAY!

Bernama Radio: A Teacher’s Journey and Starting up Pre-school Franchise

With Special Guest Puan Norazita, winner of Best Franchisee Award 2018/2019 Recently, we had the winner of Genius Aulad Franchisee Award 2018-2019 join us on our #gogenius segment on Bernama Radio. Puan Norazita has 4 Genius Aulad centres under her belt, and was awarded for how well-run her centres are. She used to be a teacher, who then ventured into the early childhood industry by setting up a regular kindergarten. In 2012, the opportunity to continue her journey through the industry by joining the Genius Aulad family popped up, and by 2012 she was able to open Genius Aulad Bandar Tun Hussein Onn. She went on to open a Genius Aulad centre every two years after that, their location being Bandar Sri Permaisuri, Bandar Mahkota Cheras and Sungai Besi. Here are some excerpts from her exclusive segment at Bernama Radio   “What is your opinion on the kindergarten franchise in the local market?” In my opinion, parents have turned to early childhood education centres in ensuring that their children are well-prepared for primary school. With the availability of an education system or specialized programme by franchises, I’m sure that it will be a great help in upgrading the quality of education in accordance to the regulations. Due to the fact that they are experienced experts in the industry. At the same time, quality can be maintained and controlled. For example: in Malaysia, Genius Aulad is one of the first pioneers to offer English-based Islamic kindergarten services. Genius Aulad offers various programmes, specially-curated modules and detailed curriculum planning. Other than that, Genius Aulad really prioritizes the quality of education in all aspects, following our Standard Operating Procedures. It was what sparked my interest in Genius Aulad. Alhamdullilah, that’s why I’ve been here for 8 years (soon to be 9). Genius Aulad constantly guides business owners and principals through CME Coaching, training and even online coaching. Besides that, Genius Aulad’s EQC (Education Quality Control) Team will visit every centre every term to check up on whether we really follow the guidelines and SOP. From there we can see that the quality in Genius Aulad is truly well-maintained, whether it’s through the content, classroom arrangement, safety precautions and more.   What are the challenges that you face as a franchisee? With children, there aren’t any challenges. But one of the challenges that we do encounter is finding quality educators who are really good at what they do, and are really passionate about it. That is a common challenge that we franchisees face in maintaining the quality of the service that we provide.   “How you deal with that particular challenge? Alhamdullilah, from the beginning we really follow every training and coaching session provided by Genius Aulad. Hence, we are able to lead and coach our teachers at our respective centres, through monthly in-house training and motivational talks. We always ensure that they have all the resources they need.   What is the most important thing to have in the early childhood industry? To me, the industry is always expanding, and does not really go through much changes when faced with economic challenges because it is a need in Malaysia. I would like to share a little bit about my experience with Genius Aulad. Genius Aulad is the first early childhood enrichment centre to be franchised in Malaysia and its growth has been really good. This can be proven through the existence of a franchisee system that is well planned, easy to follow and the fact that we move together as a team. Every decision that is made is done together.   “Thoughts on Genius Aulad’s Social Entrepreneurship?” For the services that we offer, we actually build it on the CSR that we engage in with our community. An example would be our First We Need Love programmes, where we reach out to orphanages, retirement homes, hospitals and more. Recently, we’ve worked with Lembaga Penduduk Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LPPKN), where we distributed food and necessities to the homeless. We’re also industrial partners with a few universities and welcome interns who seek experience and knowledge on the industry, so from there you can see that Genius Aulad is not just a preschool.   Look for us on Bernama Radio’s Facebook Page, or tune in to FM 93.9 MHz every WEDNESDAY to catch us on our #GOGENIUS segment, or listen to past recordings! If you’d like to know more about owning a Genius Aulad centre, get in touch with our Business Development team today at [email protected]

How To Explain “QURBAN” To Our Children

Children love to ask loads of questions, and parents often find themselves in tricky situations on Eidul Adha when their kids ask them specific questions like : “Mommy, mommy. What is Qurban?” “Ayah, why are the cows and goats herded together like that? What are they going to do with them?” Now, how do you answer them without giving them the wrong idea?

PREPARE THEIR CURIOSITY

Surprisingly, some children still do not know where the food they eat come from! Let’s take them to the neighbourhood Night Market or ‘Pasar Tani’ to introduce them to simple things that they might not know yet. Show them what a cow looks like and how to tell the difference between Daun Ketumbar and Daun Sup (Yes, mommies! Even we forget it sometimes!). You can take this time to bond with them and share the cooking you will make especially with the meat, since you will be explaining about Qurban later.

SET THE RIGHT INTENTIONS

The whole family have joyously gathered at Tok’s home to celebrate together-gather, now let’s start the feast! But hold on. What is the Eid with Qurban if we don’t celebrate with the right intentions? If we are fortunate enough to celebrate joyously with a table full of food, we should also remember to be generous to the needy and poor so that they can also have a table full of food on Eid. Show our children through our actions on how we are respectful of other religions too. Part of being a Muslim is to be tolerant of others. Remind our kids of the importance to be considerate of people who practice different faiths. It’s cool to post Selfies, but it’s cooler to refrain from posting photos of the Qurban proudly such as holding heads of the cow (or for any reason!) on social media. With that in mind, show our kids that respect doesn’t only extend to other people but animals as well. There is no reason to post Selfies of animals bleeding with our children. Just keep our intention for the Qurban clean and right.

HAVE A STORY TIME

Break Things Up in Small Subjects It’s best not to give the complete picture on the first go. Instead, break things up into smaller subjects. Talk about Hajj. Talk about how it is essential for Muslims to help others. Breaking the subjects down and feeding them “easily digestible” trivia and knowledge will make it simpler for our children to take the concept of Qurban into mind. Consistently Share The Story of Ibrahim and Ismail We know well how the story goes. It’s a story that every parent should not miss telling their children. Take some time to open a book or discuss with your children in a story during bedtime or on the way for Eid prayers. This can help transition the children from the light ‘fairytale’ nature of listening to a storybook to seeing how it looks to them in real life. Qurban is Symbolic If not explained correctly, the meaning of Qurban can be misunderstood. God does not want any ill of people or animals. The symbolic meaning behind it is that you have to be willing to let go of even your most prized possessions for the Almighty. You can explain by associating with things that also have a symbolic meaning. You can start off with phrases that go something like: “What do you think of when you see a heart? When most people see a heart, they think of love.” “What do you feel when you see the colour red/yellow/white? Do you feel angry? Happy? Peaceful?” Then go on explaining the symbolic meaning of Qurban, for example: “Allah replaced a sheep to be slaughtered for the Qurban. Nabi Ismail was the most loved by Nabi Ibrahim, so Allah wants Nabi Ibrahim to give his best love for his Qurban. We too must always give our best for the sake of Allah. “

SHOW THEM LOVE

We may think that our children are too young to understand every word about Qurban. But the exposure we give to them, the efforts in explaining to them count a lot. Children can feel our sincere intention. Most importantly is for them to feel loved, so that they know that QURBAN IS AN ACT OF LOVE, for the sake of Allah. Involve them in distributing the meat to the poor. Let them see how happy the poor to receive them. Our children can sense love all around them. That’s what matters. Love. May Allah accept all our sacrifices for His sake. “Lessons Beyond Classroom” GENIUS AULAD

Bernama Radio: The Importance of Balance in Early Childhood Education

Balance. We hear that word being emphasized a lot in the context of young children, don’t we?  With balance being the ideal that educators and parents strive after in early childhood education, how do we actually achieve it? The first step in trying to find balance is to understand our child. We often talk about discipline and try to distance them away from making mistakes that sometimes it’s easy to forget that they are new to life. They aren’t as familiar with the way things work the way that we are. Mistakes are essential in the learning process, and more often than not we learn best from them. Now, this does not mean that we should simply allow our children to go through mistake after mistake on their own. As parents and educators, we should always be there as best as we can to guide them through their mistakes and help them understand why they are mistakes. When your child makes a blunder, talk to them about it in the moment. We may think ‘Oh, I’ll reprimand them later when it’s more convenient,’ but with all that we have going on in our daily lives it might slip our minds, and our children wouldn’t even know that what they did wrong. Taking into consideration that they are new to life, think of your child as a sponge. They absorb everything, from the good to the bad. If we want our children to be well-balanced, we ourselves must try to portray the kind of behaviors and mannerisms that we want them to practice. For example, at school they learn how to line up and wait for their turn. At the end of their school year, this would come naturally to them that teachers would only have to say “Line up!” once and they would get into line accordingly. Gone are the early days where it takes 15 repetitions of the phrase (and the odd game of chase between teacher and student) to get them into place. However, does this habit only apply within school? When we are outside, be it in supermarkets, at the movies or on the road, we should practice it too. Even when our children aren’t with us, we should also think of other people’s children as well. Imagine lining up to pay for your groceries and seeing a person cutting line. What if your child asks “Papa, why didn’t he line up?” You see, children are more observant than we think they are. All adults, even if they aren’t parents and educators, are responsible for showing good examples too. If we want others to practice this, we must take the initiative to do the same. After all, children see children do (even if they aren’t ours). Your child’s education does not only rest on their teachers’ shoulders, but yours as well. Yes, they do spend most of their time at school but it’s the continuity between their school life and their daily life that will really lock in the values that we want to instill in them. You are the most important adult figure in their life, so naturally they learn best from you. If there are any parental involvement activities at school, try your best to participate in them because those are great opportunities to bridge the gap between the school and your family, which will in turn boost your child’s interest in what they learn. Get to know your child’s teachers and work together in providing the best possible environment for them to grow up in, instead of making their school and their life outside seem like two separate worlds. If you understand what the teachers practice at school with your child, then you’ll know what is the best way to complement those practices outside school. On that note, what are some things that we can do to complement our child’s daily experiences? If at school they can get their intellectual and physical input, at home you can practice life skills. This could be anything from pouring their own water, to spending time at the park, praying together or even telling stories at bedtime. When they feel sad, talk to them about their feelings and how to express them. These are all learning opportunities that will help your child develop, even if they might not take more than five minutes. Learning isn’t just something that involves books and pencils. For a child to grow up wholesomely, it involves so much more than that. At their early childhood stage, a well-balanced learning environment is crucial in the development of their love for learning. We can’t assume that all children will do well simply by going through books and other reading materials. Learning is not a one-size-fits-all process. There are so many kinds of learners among our children, and there are so many kinds of learning materials that we have access to. By understanding your child’s nature and partnering up with their educators, it will help you to navigate your way to discovering what methods work best in ensuring that your child gets a balanced development. With all that in mind, why is it important to balance out their experiences at this stage of their life? In their early years, it is the time where the foundation on which they will base their outlook on the rest of their lives is being formed. Do we just want our children to excel in their academics but shy away from human interaction? Do we want our children to be physically vibrant and reject any form of formal education? If we would like our children to be receptive to all the years of learning and life experiences that they have in store for them, let’s do our best to make sure that we help them to build a good foundation. Achieving balance in our children’s upbringing might not be as instantaneous as we would like it to be. We might stumble along the way, and we might not see the results now but with patience, perseverance and forgiveness for yourself, anything is within our reach. After all, we weren’t born to be parents and educators the same way our children weren’t born to be perfect, well-balanced people. We all start somewhere, and as Maya Angelou once said, “All great achievements require time,”. In shaa Allah. https://www.facebook.com/bernamaradio/videos/431784204188181/UzpfSTc0NDAyOTE3ODY4OjEwMTU2OTEzMTI1ODgyODY5/
